In 2008, after developing its model to measure the performance of Regional Innovation Systems, the secretariat of the Technopolicy Network was invited by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the National Research Council (NRC) to perform a quick-scan on the four provincial regions of Atlantic Canada.

The purpose of this analysis was to measure the performance of the four provincial regions on the indicators of the TPN model, in order to compare the regional performances to the performance of Atlantic Canada as a whole, resulting in a more accurate approach to further strengthen the regional innovation systems, by both the ACOA and the NRC.

The central question to be answered was:
What are the most distinctive features of the regional innovation systems of the four provincial regions in Atlantic Canada and which lessons can be learned for future efforts in further strengthening these innovation systems?”
